Which Avery® Name Badge Template Do You Need? A Practical Product-Code Guide

Choose the template by the exact product code on the pack, then confirm the finished badge dimensions, badges per sheet, page size, material and printer compatibility. Similar-looking products are not always interchangeable.

Start with the code on the package

Do not choose a template only because the badge is “about credit-card size” or because a search result shows a familiar number. Avery®’s US and UK/EU ranges use different codes, paper sizes and sheet layouts.

Verify five details:

• Product or software code
• Finished badge dimensions
• Badges per sheet
• A4 or US Letter page size
• Insert, adhesive or self-laminating format

Avery® 5390

Avery® lists template 5390 as name-badge inserts measuring 2¼ × 3½ inches, eight per US Letter sheet. It is a compact format suited to a name, organisation and short role label.

Avery® 5392

Avery® lists 5392 as 3 × 4 inch insert refills, six per US Letter sheet. The extra area supports larger names, a company, a role and a compact QR code more comfortably than 5390.

Avery® 5395

Avery® lists 5395 as adhesive name badges measuring 2⅓ × 3⅜ inches, eight per US Letter sheet. Adhesive badges are useful for short events where holders and lanyards would add unnecessary cost or handling.

Use only as directed on suitable clothing and verify the printer type supported by the exact product.

Avery® 5361

Avery® lists 5361 as self-laminating ID cards measuring 2 × 3¼ inches, three per US Letter sheet. This format is compact and more protected than a plain paper insert, but the printable design area and lamination mechanism should be tested with the exact pack.

Avery® L4785

Avery® UK lists L4785 as 80 × 50 mm self-adhesive name badges, ten per A4 sheet. The product page reviewed specifies a laser-printable acetate-silk material and removable fabric adhesive. Check the exact product because regional or material variants may differ.

Avery® L7418

Avery® UK lists L7418 as 86 × 55 mm inserts, eight per A4 sheet. The product page describes 160 g/m² card compatible with laser and inkjet printers and intended to fit common 90 × 60 mm holders.

Avery® L4727

L4727 is a 90 × 54 mm micro-perforated insert format. Avery® lists 200 inserts across 20 sheets, which means ten inserts per A4 sheet. It is designed for plastic badge holders and is suitable when you want easy separation without cutting.

Avery® L4728

L4728 is a taller 90 × 60 mm micro-perforated insert, eight per A4 sheet. It provides more vertical space than L4727 and suits holders designed for that exact size.

Avery® L4832

Avery® UK’s template page lists L4832 as an 85 × 54 mm, one-per-sheet layout. It is useful for single-card output rather than dense multi-badge sheets. Confirm the associated physical product and printer setup before production.

US and European formats are not interchangeable

US Letter is 8½ × 11 inches. A4 is 210 × 297 mm. Even if the finished badge size is similar, sheet margins and gaps can differ. Printing a Letter layout on A4 or vice versa may cause progressive alignment drift.

Choose by use case

Matching examples

Example 1: You bought a US Letter pack marked 5390. Select the 5390-compatible layout, not a generic 3 × 4 inch template. Example 2: You have a UK holder that accepts a 90 × 60 mm insert and the pack says L4728. Use the L4728 A4 layout, not the visually similar L4727. Example 3: You need adhesive badges for a one-day seminar. Match the exact 5395 or L4785 product and printer type rather than choosing an insert format.

Why approximate dimensions are not enough

Two products can share the same finished badge size but use different sheet margins, gaps or orientation. A template can therefore produce correctly sized badges that print in the wrong positions. The product code identifies the whole sheet geometry, not only the finished rectangle.

Regional product families can also use related codes for different materials or pack quantities. The software code on the package is the safest starting point.

Calibrate the print workflow

• Download or create a simple alignment test with borders at the finished badge edges.
• Print on plain paper using actual size.
• Place the paper behind the real badge sheet and hold it to light.
• Confirm all positions, not only the top-left badge.
• Load one real sheet in the manufacturer’s recommended orientation.
• Print a production-style test containing names and logos.
• Adjust only the layout or printer setting responsible for the error.

Do not compensate for printer scaling by randomly moving individual text elements. Fix page scaling and sheet alignment first.

Common causes of Avery® alignment drift

• Printing an A4 layout on US Letter or the reverse.
• Using “fit”, “shrink oversized pages” or borderless scaling.
• Loading the sheet in the wrong orientation.
• Selecting a product with the same badge size but different margins.
• Printer feed variation on curled or previously fed sheets.
• Re-feeding partially used sheets against product guidance.
• Creating a custom PDF with incorrect page boxes.

Plan for QR codes and long names

Smaller formats such as 5390 leave limited space after a large readable name. Use a short code value and test the resulting QR density. For content-rich badges, a larger insert such as 5392 or a conference-size custom format may be more appropriate than forcing every element onto a compact label.
